The Unique and Mystical Venue in the Heart of Cyprus
Located in the İplik Pazarı-Korkut Efendi neighbourhood of North Nicosia, the Büyük Hamam is a mysterious gateway into the city’s rich and layered past. The foundations of the structure were laid between 1306 and 1309 as the St. George of the Latins Lusignan Church, yet its fate was written by water and politics.
The structure was submerged and severely damaged during the great flood disaster of November 10, 1330, and it carries the traces of that destruction to this day. Even now, a Lusignan-era nail whispers to history, marking the dramatic level the floodwaters reached. The fact that it was the scene of an attempted assassination against King Peter I of Cyprus on January 17, 1369, proves the profound story embedded within these walls.
With the arrival of the Ottoman Empire in 1571, the devastated church was transformed into a Turkish Hammam, set to become the heart of Nicosia’s cultural and social life. Without major changes to the main entrance, a new back door was constructed, and a traditional seven-domed Turkish hammam was built. Belonging to the foundation of Lala Mustafa Pasha, this structure served as a centre for purification, socialisation, and healing for the local populace for centuries.
Meticulous restoration work carried out between 2007 and 2008, supported by UNESCO and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), revived this historical heritage by preserving the hammam’s original texture and cultural value.
Constructed as a single-storey building with cut stone masonry, the Büyük Hamam presents the flawless architecture typical of an Ottoman bath. This three-stage structure prepares the visitor for tranquility through a ritualistic progression:
- Soğukluk (Cooling Section / Relaxation Room): This section, bearing traces of the historic Latin Church, greets you with a mysterious texture reminiscent of a museum. It includes the reception and changing rooms before the hammam, and peaceful lounges where you can sip your drink and relax in your bathrobe afterward. It is the first stop where your body disconnects from the outside world.
- Ilıklık (Intermediate Section / Transition and Balance Room): The purification point where your body temperature is slowly balanced, containing showers and personal resting areas. It is a moment of lightness and preparation before transitioning to the heat.
- Sıcaklık (Hot Section / Heart of Renewal): This is the main area where the traditional ritual comes alive. It is where you release toxins by sweating on the Göbek Taşı (heated marble stone), and where you prepare for a deep cleanse in the eyvans (alcoves) and steam room. The Halvets (private rooms) are the spaces where the revitalizing scrub and foam massage services are provided by expert hands, and where your soul is reborn.
