A hammam is a traditional public bath developed within the Ottoman world. It follows a slow progression through cool, warm and hot rooms, with a heated marble platform at its centre.
A pestemal — a light cotton wrap — is provided on arrival and worn throughout your visit. Simple, plain swimwear may be worn beneath it if you prefer.
Nothing is required. A hair tie can be useful. Please leave jewellery, watches and valuables safely stored in the changing area.
Yes. Please mention this in your reservation so the visit can be arranged with care.
Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly at weekends. WhatsApp is the fastest way to confirm a time.

Since the Ottoman Era

A bathhouse shaped by more than four centuries of Nicosia's history.

Büyük Hamam stands within the Venetian walls of Nicosia, incorporating fragments of an earlier medieval structure and, from the late sixteenth century onward, functioning as a public Ottoman Turkish bath.

The complex is documented as a seven-domed hammam. Beneath its domes, generations of Cypriots and travellers have followed the same slow progression from cool to warm to hot.

The Experience

The traditional progression, unhurried.

The Turkish hammam is not a treatment list. It is a progression through temperature, water and stone — offered at the pace the building intends.

01

Arrival and changing

You are welcomed into the cooling section (soğukluk), given a pestemal and shown to a private changing area.

02

Warming beneath the domes

Move through the warm room and settle onto the heated marble platform of the hot room. The body adjusts gradually.

03

Traditional cleansing

Warm water is poured from marble basins in a slow, methodical rhythm — a central part of Turkish hammam culture.

04

Kese exfoliation

A traditional woven mitt is used for gentle exfoliation, cleansing the skin after the body has thoroughly warmed.

05

Foam ritual

A soft, cloud-like foam wash finishes the sequence — one of the most familiar images of the Turkish hammam.

06

Rest and refreshment

Return to the cooling section, wrap in fresh cotton and take time to rest. The final pause is part of the ritual.

Architecture

Stone, marble, steam, light.

The hammam is organised around a clear architectural logic: domes over the hot rooms, water carried in cut marble, and a central heated stone at the heart of the building. Fragments of earlier Gothic decoration remain visible near the entrance.

  • Seven-domed composition
  • Cut stone and marble construction
  • The heated central platform — göbek taşı
  • Marble basins fed by warm water
  • Progression through warm and hot rooms
  • Surviving Gothic details at the entrance
  • Woven into the fabric of the Walled City

A Living Monument

History you can feel, not simply look at.

Büyük Hamam is still warmed, washed and prepared for guests every day. Move through its historic rooms slowly, follow the ritual, and experience a living part of Nicosia rather than an object behind museum glass.

Plan Your Visit

A quiet arrival is the best arrival.

Reservations are strongly recommended. Arrive a little earlier than needed and allow the pace of the Walled City to slow you down before you enter.

Within the Walled City

A hammam, at the centre of a slow day.

Büyük Hamam is one of the most atmospheric places to spend a few hours inside the walls of Nicosia. A coffee in the old market, a slow walk between the churches and caravanserais, and a visit to the hammam make a full and unforced day.
