Ottoman Hammam Architecture: Inside Büyük Hamam's Seven Domes
A room-by-room explanation of how heat, water, stone and daylight shape Nicosia's historic Turkish bath.

Ottoman hammam architecture is sometimes reduced to an image of a single domed room. In reality, the bath works as a sequence of spaces, materials and temperatures. Büyük Hamam in Nicosia is documented as a seven-domed complex, and its architecture becomes clearest when understood through movement.
The cooling section: threshold between city and bath
The first part of a hammam receives visitors, supports changing and provides a place to rest before returning to the street. Its temperature is closer to the outside environment than the hot rooms beyond. Architecturally, it acts as a buffer between public urban life and the controlled climate of the bath.
At Büyük Hamam, the entrance also reveals the building's layered history. Surviving decorated stonework associated with an earlier phase stands beside later Ottoman adaptations. The threshold therefore introduces both the bathing sequence and the site's longer historical story.
Warm rooms and controlled transition
Visitors do not move directly from the street into the hottest space. Intermediate rooms allow the body to adjust and help the building retain heat. Thick masonry, limited openings and connected volumes create a gradual environmental transition rather than a sharp change.
This progression is one reason a hammam cannot be understood only from a floor plan. Temperature, humidity, echoes and the feel of stone underfoot are architectural qualities. They turn circulation into a ritual.
The sıcaklık and the göbek taşı
The sıcaklık, or hot room, is the heart of the composition. Its central raised marble platform is called the göbek taşı, often translated as belly stone. Heated from below, it provides a broad surface where guests can warm gradually and receive parts of the traditional treatment.
Basins, known as kurna, are positioned around the room so warm water can be scooped and poured. The relationship between central platform and perimeter basins creates an architecture without a single fixed seat or treatment cubicle. Movement remains flexible within a clearly ordered room.
Why domes matter
Domes span humid rooms efficiently while giving each chamber a distinct volume. Small glazed apertures admit daylight without the exposure and heat loss of large windows. Beams move across marble and stone as the sun changes, making time visible inside an otherwise enclosed environment.
The star and circular forms associated with dome openings also became part of Büyük Hamam's visual identity. Their meaning begins in architecture: they are devices for light, privacy and atmosphere before they become decorative symbols.
A bathhouse embedded in Nicosia
Büyük Hamam does not stand apart from the city as a freestanding monument. It is woven into the lanes of Lefkoşa's historic centre. The exterior follows the scale of its surroundings, while the domed volumes become more legible from within.
That urban modesty makes the interior experience more surprising. Visitors pass from a dense street into a sequence of warm, luminous rooms that has supported bathing for generations.
