Ottoman Hammam Architecture: Büyük Hamam's Seven Domes
A room-by-room look at how heat, water, stone and daylight shape Büyük Hamam, the Ottoman bath of 1571–1590 in Nicosia.
An Ottoman hammam is a machine for warmth, built in stone. Every room has a job: to welcome, to warm, to wash, to cool. Büyük Hamam, recorded as a seven-domed hammam, shows that logic clearly — and adds a few surprises of its own.
The cooling hall: between street and bath
The visit begins and ends in the cooling hall. Here are the reception, a fountain at the centre and timber galleries around the upper level. At Büyük Hamam the threshold itself tells a story: carved Gothic stonework at the entrance survives from the medieval church that stood on this site.
The warm room: a controlled transition
Between the hall and the hot room lies the warm room, where temperature and humidity rise gently. Thick masonry and few openings keep the heat steady, and pointed arches frame the passage from one room to the next.
The hot room and the göbek taşı
Under the largest dome is the hot room, with the göbek taşı — the heated marble platform — at its centre. Guests rest on it to warm up slowly before the scrub. Around the walls stand the kurnas, the marble basins from which warm water is poured with a bowl.
Why the domes matter
The domes do more than cover the rooms. Small star-shaped and round glass openings let in beams of daylight that move across the marble during the day, while the dome keeps the warmth inside. The star of those openings became part of Büyük Hamam's emblem.
A bath woven into its street
From İrfan Bey Sokak, the bath does not announce itself. It sits close within its street, just behind Büyük Han, generous in size but modest in manner — a building that belongs to its neighbourhood.
