Turkish Hammam Etiquette in Cyprus: What to Wear and Bring

At Büyük Hamam a peştemal — a light, woven cotton wrap — is provided and worn throughout the visit. Simple swimwear underneath is welcome. Leave jewellery at home or in the changing area, tie long hair back, and remove make-up before the scrub if you can.

Very little. A hair tie is useful, and a change of clothes makes the walk back into the old city more comfortable. A private changing area with secure storage is ready for your belongings. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, tell your therapist before the masks and body care.

Keep your voice low — the sound of water on marble should be the loudest thing in the room. Leave your phone with your belongings, keep your peştemal on and give other guests their space.

The hammam is about warming up slowly, not about enduring heat. If you feel too warm, move to a cooler room, drink water and tell your therapist. If you are pregnant or under a doctor's care, tell us when you book so we can plan the visit with you.

You choose the gender of your therapist when you book. Our therapists are certified and come to us from Bali, Indonesia.
